Meet Yourself step 2

Stage Two is a natural in-depth continuation of Meet Yourself Step 1. The course is geared to give you a picture and an emotional experience of how it was to be a child in the family you grew up in. You will get to understand who you are and what has shaped you as a person. This will create an understanding for why you react and act as you do in your grown up life.

Our childhood influences us so strongly because we, as children, are not able to choose. We are stuck with the family we grow up in. For a small child, it’s all about survival. We cannot survive without adults to take care of us. This dependency means that we adjust and find strategies to be accepted in order to get what we need. Our strategies become the truth about ourselves. When we later grow up, and can manage by ourselves, we automatically continue to adjust to our surroundings whether we want it or not. We have lost contact with our true selves.

Everybody carries some form of mental pain. It can be memories from having been misunderstood, neglected, rejected, made fun of or maybe even physically threatened or assaulted. These memories, often pre-intellectual ones, are stored in our body. Since these memories carry painful feelings such as sorrow, anger, despair, panic and fear of death we will do anything to avoid coming in contact with them.

As a result we are caught in an illusion; the pain continues guiding our lives although the danger is over. Avoiding our mental pain becomes more important than doing what we really want to do. This is the reason why we continue to live with our childhood standards which perhaps really don’t suit us at all. Of course we also carry positive memories from our first years in life, but these memories do not present any difficulties for us. Our positive memories are, instead, the basis of what is good in our lives.

In order to live a grown up and responsible life, where we can also express moral courage, we need to reveal the lies about ourselves that we were fed with as children. In this way we can make contact with our grandeur, the boundlessness which lies and waits for us outside our intellect. An important part of the process is that, under safe conditions, we get the opportunity to meet and become reconciled with the pain and in this way let go of the fear that prevents us from living our lives fully. Not until then can we create our lives from our true selves and what we really believe in.
